Assessment Dates are TBD but will be during this event.

Update: Due to the level of interest in assessment, we will do our best to accommodate all folks interested. I expect we will have 2 groups on different days, but we may be able to exceed the 5:1 ratio by assigning course assistants for each group.

Participants will need to reserve their own campsites, which will go quickly. Several of us have reservations in the B & C loop (sites B05, B34, B35, C10, C16). See link below for camping reservations. Arrive Friday evening, 4/17 (or sooner) and depart Sunday, 4/26. Paddling, hiking, biking, and sightseeing.

Leader’s notes:

We're going back to Kiptopeke! This trip will have more emphasis on surfing and rough water excitement. We'll also explore some new places to paddle. We will also make the requisite stop a time or two (or more??) at Cape Charles Brewing.

We will base camp at Kiptopeke State Park campground and do day paddles on Chesapeake Bay and the ocean. Bay side paddles will range from flat calm and protected to windy with 1-2' waves. Ocean side paddling will be more challenging with surf, current, tide races and the wave train. There are also plenty of islands to explore as well on the ocean side with moderate currents and tide to contend with.

Currents through Smith Island Inlet can run from 3 - 7 kts, so the we'll have to go through the inlet with the currents.

This trip will also offer participants casual opportunities to practice surf launching & landing, paddling in wind, turning in wind, draw strokes, rudder strokes (bow & stern), bracing, edging and boat control, rolling and sculling. We hope to encourage some fun learning opportunities as we explore. Due to the weather and other factors, the itinerary will be determined each day and communicated to participants as far in advance as the forecasts reasonably allow. All day trips are subject to change to maintain kayaker safety. Participants can choose whether or not to join each day’s scheduled trip. Trip Leaders may restrict or redirect individual participants on any given day, if necessary, to maximize individual and group safety. If the weather makes padding unreasonable, there are lots of biking and hiking opportunities nearby.

Required Equipment

Sea kayaks 15’ or longer with full perimeter deck lines, sealed fore and aft bulkheads and/or floatation in both ends of the kayak·

USCG approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)

Drysuit or wetsuit with dry top/splash top

Spray skirt

Bilge pump with floatation

Self-rescue paddle float

Waterproof whistle

Appropriate clothing for the conditions encountered seasonally

Storm cag or poncho

Participants must be able to:

Safely exit their kayak while wearing a spray skirt and participate in an assisted rescue.

Maintain a pace of 2.5-3.0 mph in L3 conditions in any wind or wave direction.

Paddle for up to 3 hours without landing. (Expect 4-7 hours of paddling each day)

North Carolina in spring, inside a resplendent gorge with a mountain river, is a sumptuous location whether you're a vet or a rookie paddler. Whether you’re there to refresh your skills, learn new ones or just chill for a paddle among the flowering trees and rhododendrons.

This river is released out of the bottom of a dam, as such it is the benchmark for chilly water. Heard in convo: “Is it Nanty cold?” Typically 55°. Therefore dress for the swim. If you don’t have drypants, a polypro base layer with your shorts over the top is preferred attire in the event of a swim. In April typically folks prefer a full dry top over a shorty.

Location: City of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, downtown, just north of Akron.

There will be river related vendors, and the downtown restaurants are walking distance from the falls. Bob will likely stay at a motel, it’s up to the group to decide where to camp.

This will be a first for the Hoosier Club, fortunately your Trip Leader, Big Drop Heckler, has made the run.

Join us for an overnight paddling trip on Lake Monroe.   Lake Monroe lets us camp from our boats along the shore in Deem Wilderness. This is our annual spring pilgrimage and we will camp out on the peninsula across from Cutright Public Access Site.   

If you only want to paddle on Saturday, our campsite should be only be about 3-4 miles from the Cutright put-in so that people are welcome to come out and day-paddle with us without camping.

Registration:  Please register on the club web site or by email if necessary

Meeting Place/Put-In:  Cutright Public Access Site.  This is about 2 hours from the intersection of Hwy 37 and I-465 on the southeast side of Indianapolis. (Google Map)   

Directions to Meeting Place: Take Hwy 446 south from Hwy 46 on the east side of Bloomington to the Lake Monroe causeway.  Cutright is the first turn on your left immediately after you cross the causeway. Go to the first boat ramp that you come to after leaving Hwy 446.  

What to Bring:  Bring your paddling gear, spray skirt, camping gear, food for lunch, dinner, and breakfast, and warm clothes.  You should also bring drinking water with you.   We will be camping from our boats and you will have to pack all of your gear and food in your boat, so plan accordingly.

Be sure to have a 2026 Indiana DNR Nonmotorized Boat Permit.  You should be able to pick one up on the way to the meeting place, either at the DNR headquarter on Hwy 446 on the north side of the entrance to the Paynetown SRA or at the gate for the Paynetown SRA.

Required Equipment:   Depending on the temperatures, wet suits or dry suits are recommended.  Due to potentially rough lake conditions, spray skirts, safety equipment, and sea/touring kayaks with fore and aft bulkheads are required.

Schedule:    Saturday - 10:00 am is the recommended time for arrival at the put-In.  We will launch at 10:45 am.  We will probably paddle about 4-5 miles and then set up camp and have lunch.  After lunch, we will go out and explore more of the lake.

Sunday:  We are flexible here.  We could return to Cutright as early as 10:00 am and drop off people who have to take off.  We’ll talk and figure this out Saturday night depending on how far people want to paddle on Sunday and when people have get home.

Estimated finish time: 3-4 PM

Intended fleets: Flat water, sea kayak.

Put-in note: the launch is concrete steps about 500 feet upriver from Potter's Bridge. There is a 10-car parking lot close to the steps, and a larger parking lot next to the covered bridge. Plan to unload boats by the small parking lot, then move your car to the larger parking lot to run shuttle.

Trip Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. Expect mostly calm flowing water with few hazards. There may be trees or rocks in the river, so basic boat handling skills may be required. This is a 13 mile paddle. We'll plan to stop at a sand bar part way through the run and have a snack. It's hard to predict what the weather will be like, so check the weather and dress accordingly. The water's still cool, so bring a change of clothes in a dry bag.

Suggested items to bring: Wide brimmed hat, sun block, sunglasses, large sponge, bilge pump or container to bail out water, water, snacks, towel, change of clothes, water shoes, paddling gloves, rain gear, bug spray, safety whistle, camera, a sense of adventure, and a good dose of humor. For clothing try to use something other than cotton, especially since the weather will be cool. Polypropylene or polyester are good choices since neither holds water and they wick moisture away from you.

HCKC rules require you to wear a PFD while on the water.

Join us for a weekend of sea kayaking at Michigan’s “Tip of the Thumb”. Paddling opportunities include sandy beaches, low sandstone cliffs, an offshore lighthouse, shallow shipwreck viewing, and the iconic Turnip Rock.

Trip Info: This HCKC sponsored trip will likely include 2 day trips. Paddles will average 10-14 miles per day (weather permitting). Water temperatures on Lake Huron in early May average about 50°F. Immersion protection will be required to participate, dry-suits are recommended.

2. Graffiti Rock

a. Route: State Park Campground to Pinnebog River to Graffiti Rock and back (10-11 miles)

Required Equipment:

I. Sea kayaks 15’ or longer with full perimeter deck lines, sealed fore and aft bulkheads and/or floatation.

II. Personal Flotation Device (PFD) & whistle, spray skirt, pump, and paddle float

III. Dry Suit, (or wetsuit and dry top at a minimum). The water will be cold and the air may not be that warm either.

IV. VHF radio (recommended if you own one)

V. Extra food and water, sunscreen, waterproof matches, headlamp, emergency blanket, first aid (especially epi-pens or required medications)

Day trips will be selected to minimize weather impact, but maximum conditions could be as described below:

· Visiting the lighthouse involves a 1 to 1.5 mile open water crossing each way

· There may be fishing boats/recreational traffic

· There are limited landing opportunities due to private property (including Turnip Rock).

· Winds up to 15 knots (17mph)

· Waves up to 2 feet, plus confused wave patterns due to shallows extending far from the shoreline

· Expect 4-6 hours of paddling each day

Participants must be able to:

o Safely exit their kayak and participate in an assisted rescue in the above conditions

o Maintain a pace near 2.5-3.0 mph in L3 conditions in any wind or wave direction

o Perform a solo rescue in L3 conditions

o Paddle for up to 3 hours without landing

o Paddle for 10-14 miles per day

Do you want to learn how to efficiently paddle using a traditional "skinny stick"? Trying to learn to roll or finally perfect that forward finishing hand roll? Always wanted to throw a harpoon or paddle a traditional skin-on-frame qajaq? TRAQS is the event for you whether you're just starting or you're an advanced paddler.

TRAQS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to spread the joy, benefits and cultural aspects of Greenland paddling in Florida. We adhere to the Greenlandic and Qajaq USA principles of mentoring and sharing our passion, skills and knowledge.

TRAQS 2026 will take place April 30-May 3 2026 at the beautiful Lake Placid Camp and Conference center in Lake Placid, Florida. Registration for TRAQS 2026 is now OPEN.

We will have a terrific roster of new and returning Guest Mentors as well as some new fun classes. We are extremely excited to welcome Adam Hansen from Aasiaat, Greenland. Adam was the organizer of the 2017 Greenland Qajaq Championship. He has been a Special Guest Mentor at several Qajaq USA events due to his excellent kayaking and communication skills.

The world famous Cheri Perry, Greg Stamer and the indomitable Dubside along with new mentor Pete Kuhn will be joining us. Chris Raab of Tuktu Paddles will be leading our paddling making class this year.

TRAQS 2026 will be our 10th annual immersive Greenland kayaking weekend that includes paddling and rolling skills, presentations, morning yoga, kayak games, exposure to Inuit culture and of course our auction with items generously contributed by businesses, mentors and participants to help sustain this event.

TRAQS is also a terrific opportunity to meet other kayakers. Join us in a warm (temperature and atmosphere) and nurturing environment. Enjoy the camaraderie while learning and sharing kayaking techniques and skills.

Whether you are local to Florida, or are looking for a personal or family winter get-away, this event, modeled after The Delmarva Paddlers Retreat, offers a paddler a wonderful weekend of enjoyment.

This is a fun trip for all skill levels but is long so you need to have the stamina for a distance paddle. We start at Furnas Mill on Sugar Creek which joins the Driftwood. Our take out is 14 miles downstream at Lowel Bridge near Columbus. Be prepared with sunscreen, water, lunch and paddling gloves in addition to your regular gear. The meeting time is on the early side in order to get on the water ahead of the folks from Blue’s Canoes Outfitters. The trip leader will monitor conditions and if there are any challenges will put out an email to registered participants by 7 pm Friday evening.

Meeting time:     9 am

Meeting location: Shell station just off I-65 at exit 80. Once participants arrive we will caravan to Furnas Mill on Sugar Creek. If you prefer to meet us at the put in, just notify the trip leader.

Family and friends of Ken Wright will celebrate his life the second weekend in May in Ocoee, Tennessee.

Camping will be at Adventures Unlimited (AU), 522 US-64, Ocoee, TN 37361.

Friday evening we’ll have a private taco dinner and celebration of life. The memorial paddle will be on Saturday and then Piano Bob will play for a dance party Saturday evening at the campground. On Sunday, those so inclined may paddle the Middle Ocoee again.

Join us for a weekend of paddling, skills, and camping at East Fork State Park.  This is an introductory class for learning kayak camping skills.

This trip to EFSP offers the opportunity to kayak camp at the primitive backcountry camp sites located around the lake. We will also be working on rescues and rolls on the water while enjoying the scenery. If you prefer not to primitive camp please feel free to utilize the front country campsites at the campground and we can meet up when we put out on the water.

Event Information:

The Stonycreek Rendezvous is an annual whitewater festival hosted by the Benscreek Canoe Club in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and a long time Hoosier favorite whitewater destination. The event is held at Greenhouse Park, the takeout for the Stoneycreek run so you just hoist your boat on a shoulder and walk to your campsite! Benscreek CC guided the construction of two surf and play waves, for fun and competition inside the creek & it’s even available at night under the lights 100ft from the fest. The fest is held over three days in May (many Hoosiers will drive Thursday & camp late at the park that night to be ready to paddle in the afternoon on Friday). During the three days of the event, there is live music, food and gear vendors, a whitewater rodeo, downriver race, daily whitewater releases into the Stonycreek from the Quemahoning Dam.

WHY IS WILDERNESS FIRST AID AND CPR TRAINING IMPORTANT?  Accidents and unexpected medical emergencies happen. The temperature drops, the wind picks up, and it starts to rain. People get hurt, sick, or lost. Would you know what to do?   Many backcountry and on-water emergencies are preventable, but when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can make things even worse. By learning how to quickly assess a person’s conditions and a few basic skills, you can make the difference between a good outcome and a bad one-and maybe even save a life.

WHO IS WILDERNESS FIRST AID (WFA) FOR?  The WFA is the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants a basic level of first aid training for trips with family, friends, and outdoor groups. The 2-day SOLO WFA certification meets the ACA guidelines.

WHAT IS TAUGHT? The WFA class is 16-hours long (two days), and focuses on the basic skills of: Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies, Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies.

CPR focuses on rapid response to Cardiac and Respiratory emergencies.

A new edition of the training book will be provided. CPR materials will be sent to participants prior to the class for review.

This has been running for over 30 years and focuses on beginner and intermediate paddlers. There is a level 3 section which is currently filled but taking a waiting list. Location: Summit Lake 5993 N. Messick Road New Castle, Indiana  South Boat Launch Near Harvey Shelter (Enter Park and go left at the T intersection and follow the signs to the boat launch)

We will be practicing kayak handling and rescue techniques. We will focus on how to manage your boat to keep from capsizing, and how to get yourself and your friends back into their boats when the inevitable happens in open water. There will be plenty of time to work on strokes, bracing, balancing, towing, and rescues.

This clinic is an opportunity for new paddlers to learn open water rescue techniques and a chance for more experienced paddlers to compare techniques and practice them in a safe environment. This clinic is important since kayakers need to regularly practice these skills, so they are “fresh” when we get into a real rescue situation. You want to know how to get yourself or someone else back in their boat quickly and on your first attempt. Open water paddlers should take this course before attempting any "big water" adventures.

Rescue Course Content:

·       Wet exiting your boat

·       Solo Re-entries (Paddle Float, Cowboy, Stirrup, Re-enter and Roll)

·       Assisted Re-entries (T-Rescue, Scoop Rescue)

·       Towing - contact tows, short tows, and regular tows. Will discuss when to start towing and when towing may be needed to assist a rescue (We will bring extra tow ropes if you don’t have one.)

Communications During an Emergency

Required Equipment:

·       Touring or Sea Kayak - Kayak must have flotation in both bow and stern either sealed bulkheads or flotation bags

·       Spray Skirt

·       Life Jacket

Radio if you have one

·       Kayak Safety Gear - Bring the kayak safety gear that you normally carry: pump, paddle float, stirrup, tow line. Please do not buy this equipment just for this class since you can borrow from other participants to see what works for you before you buy.

An Indiana DNR 2026 Non- Motorized Sticker is required for each boat $5 at the gate or can be ordered in advance online

Join us for a long weekend of kayaking, kayak surfing (hopefully) and rough-water play (again, hopefully) with some training and rolling sprinkled in for those wanting to do so. This is a NON-HCKC event but many of us attend annually. Paddles will be L2/L3.

There are no pre-planned paddles or schedules, however, there is a potluck dinner Friday evening with a guest speaker afterwards. Folks typically find friends or make new friends to paddle with.

To get to South Bass Island, you can either take the ferry (Miller Ferry to Put-in-Bay) or paddle over.

Several of us will be arriving earlier in the week (Tuesday thru Thursday) to maximize the fun factor. We'll be camping at the South Bass Island State Park. Camp sites may no longer be available but there may be an opportunity to share a site with someone that has already booked a site.

Paddles include the Bass Islands (North, South and Middle), Green Island, Rattlesnake Island, Sugar Island, etc.

All of the standard sea kayaking equipment is required.

Introduction to Kayaking Skills for HCKC Members

This training is designed for new or existing paddlers that want to learn or refine basic kayaking skills and boat control to make your paddling easier and more efficient.

The instructors will first lead a discussion on basic equipment, body mechanics and safety. You will then quickly get on the water to learn how to move your boat forward, backwards, and sideways. Additional skills include turning your kayak and prevention of capsize. You won’t intentionally be getting into the water at this clinic unless you want to.

8:00-8:30am           Meet at Geist Park on Florida Road and move kayaks and gear to the water.

8:30-9:00am           Review basic equipment and body mechanics.

9:00-10:30am         On the water strokes demo and practice.

10:30-11:00am      Snack break and discussion on safe paddling practices.

11:00-12:30pm      On the water skills and a short paddle.

Don’t have time to paddle distant rivers? Then join us for an eastside Indianapolis favorite. Bring a lunch, sunscreen and water in addition to your usual paddling gear. Life vests are required to be worn on club trips.

Meet at the McDonald’s at 9833 Fall Creek Road (E. 79th & Fall Creek Rd.) at 10 am. The put in is across the street and once boats are unloaded we will shuttle to the take out. There are 2 possible take outs so folks will need to decide which they prefer. Emerson take out is a 7.2 mile trip and Keystone is a 9.7 mile trip. Lunch will be just below ‘Killer’ Falls…new paddlers don’t be intimidated as it is just a short rapids. This creek goes up and down quickly so if there are any challenges the trip leader will notify you by 7 pm on Friday, June 26.

The Les Cheneaux islands are a group of islands off the south shore of the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We are planning 3 full days of paddling, depending upon weather conditions. Choices of paddling include various routes directly from the campground: Government Island, Narnia (near the Dolomite mines), and various routes through the islands. We can also launch from Hessel to paddle to through various bays along the coast. There are many options to choose from, and most paddles can be adjusted in length. Additionally, the many islands offer opportunities to practice navigation skills if desired.

We will be camping at the Loon’s Point Campground (Cedarville, MI) which offers spaces for RVs (electric, water, sewer), tent sites, and a couple of small cabins. Participants must make their own campground reservations (see info below).

Trip Requirements:

These paddles will be on Lake Huron. Most paddles will be protected from the main lake by islands; however, there may be exposed areas requiring paddlers to be sufficiently skilled in moderately rough water.

Skills: Expected ability of an L2 paddler is an efficient forward stroke such that you can maintain 3 mph pace with breaks. You should be proficient with maneuvering in L2 conditions which include winds up to 10 knots (12 mph) and surf up to 1 ft. You should be able to edge your kayak to aid in turning and understand how to brace to maintain balance. You should be able to paddle for 3-4 hours and/or 6-10 miles. This trip is rated at L2/L2+ meaning that we may be in conditions exceeding a strict L2 definition for part of a paddle – most often due to changing weather conditions.

Rescue Training - Must have some training in self and assisted open water rescue skills prior to the trip. You should be able to re-enter your kayak with assistance and direction from a trip leader in L2 conditions.

Paddling Equipment:  Sea Kayaks only – 16 foot or longer with two watertight compartments or approved floatation; PFD, whistle, and spray skirt required. Recommended equipment includes a pump, paddle float, first aid kits and tow rope. Optional equipment includes GPS, compass, map, VHF radio.

Clothing:  Always be prepared to dress for immersion. July weather is generally mild; however water temperature dictates your clothing choice. Access to wet suit/dry suit recommended. We will monitor water temperatures as we near departure date. If you need advice on clothing, contact a trip leader.

Please join us as we partake our 17th annual East Fork White River float in south central Indiana. Over the years I have provided a variety of six different sections of laid-back paddling on one of the most sandy beached rivers of Indiana. Our journeys over the years have taken on us on 62.3 different miles from : Columbus to Azalia 2016, Azalia to Rockford 2013 and 2022, Seymour to Brownstown 2010 and 2020, Brownstown to Medora 2018 and 2021, Brownstown to White/Muscatatuck 2011 and Medora to Sparksville 2012 and 2019. The width of the stream will vary greatly due to summer conditions from 100 to 250 feet. You will experience some of the states longest sandbars providing ample opportunities for a lunchbreak. The reliable East Fork is one of only a hand full of Hoosier streams that can be paddled in near drought conditions. Throughout the years we have had as many as 16 paddlers and once only three showed up. Swimming portion of the Indy Sprint Triathlon Series. HCKC members and guest provide safety boats for the swimmers in the 500 meter course. Participants are there to provide assistance to swimmers, guide them on the course, allow a place to rest or signal for extraction. We will be on the outside of the course while city lifeguards are on the inside of the course. Meet at the Eagle Creek Park office on 56th street just northwest of the main park entrance and just before you get to the bridge over the reservoir.

If you're bringing a guest or another family member please register them separately.

We must be unloaded and on the water by 7:45-50 as the swimming starts at 8am. Instructions will be given just prior to the event. No special skills needed. Items which may enhance your effectiveness are whistle, short throw line and float, extra PFD. We are usually done by 9. Some go to breakfast, some go paddle around, some have to go home and do chores.

This is an important event to HCKC as we the club is paid for helping with this event. You will get an event T-shirt for participating, please register with shirt size. Canoe, Kayak or paddle board OK.

Class Content: Here’s a way to jumpstart your paddling! As a new kayaker, you may know how to move your boat around in calm water. We will work with you to make your paddling easier and more efficient—to give you more control over your boat. We will work on your basic knowledge, strokes, and other paddling skills that you may need to safely enjoy the sport. This course is based on the American Canoe Association “Introduction to Kayaking” course. This is also a great opportunity to ask any question that you might have about paddling, equipment, or the Hoosier Canoe and Kayak Club.
Your instructor will first talk about the basics and then quickly get on the water to teach you how to move your boat forward, backwards, and sideways as well as how to turn and stop. .

Intermediate Section - Intermediate Techniques and Refinement
Specific topic is TBD. We can handle up to 5 students in each class.

These classes are for all kayak paddlers. The intermediate class is geared more towards sea kayaks.

Your Chance of Immersion: We will demonstrate rescue skills in the Intro class but you won’t intentionally be getting into the water at this clinic unless you want to practice rescues. Thatcher Pool’s Wednesday night sessions are a better place to practice rescues and wet exits

Class Size: Attendance for each class will be limited to 5 students for each instructor.

Founded in 2002, Qajaq TC (Training Camp) is an Official Qajaq USA event. It takes place at Camp Lookout, near Frankfort, Michigan. There is no road access to the camp. Our only access is by kayak or pontoon boat, making this a true full-immersion Traditional Greenland Kayaking event. With only around sixty attendees and a very high mentor-to-student ratio, coaching is flexible and focused on helping everyone succeed, whether you have never been in a kayak before, or have decades of experience. With the exception of youth scholarship attendees, this event is intended for adults.

Please note that you do not need to have a roll to attend camp. We have people for this.

Qajaq USA has fleet gear that we will have on-site for you to use for the weekend. The minimum requirement is that you bring your own PFD (life jacket). Throughout the weekend you are welcome to try different pieces of gear in our fleet. However, if you do need to borrow any gear for the full weekend, please email us in advance so that we can be sure to make appropriate arrangements.

Join us for a week of sea kayaking in the Canadian North Channel of Lake Huron, one of the most beautiful paddling locations on the Great Lakes! This is a "no-facilities" leave no trace kayak camping trip. Participants will need to pack everything they need for 5 nights of camping on granite slabs.

Trip Info: This HCKC sponsored trip will likely include 3-4 day trips. Paddles will average 9-12 miles per day (weather permitting). Air & Water temperatures in this area in early September will likely be in the mid-60s, overnight lows could be in the mid 40s.

I.    Sea kayaks 15’ or longer with full perimeter deck lines, sealed fore and aft bulkheads and/or floatation.

II. Personal Flotation Device (PFD) & whistle, spray skirt, pump, and paddle float.

III.   Appropriate paddling clothing for the conditions.

IV.   VHF radio, EPIRB or InReach (recommended if you own one) Cellular coverage is iffy at best.

V. Free Standing tent due to lack of topsoil. All equipment needed to camp unsupported for 5 nights.

Participants must be able to:

o   Safely exit their kayak and participate in an assisted rescue in the above conditions

o   Maintain a pace near 2.5-3.0 mph in L3 conditions in any wind or wave direction

o   Perform a solo rescue in L3 conditions

o   Paddle for up to 3 hours without landing

o   Paddle for 10-14 miles per day

Join us for a week of exploring and primitive camping on the eastern shore of Georgian Bay, Ontario. The 30,000-island area of Georgian Bay is the world’s largest freshwater archipelago and is regarded as one of the most scenic paddling destinations in North America. We will be paddling and camping in a section of Islands, running from Dillon’s cove to Parry Sound.

The itinerary will be dependent on wind and weather conditions but is planned as:

Saturday - Travel Day; arrival Killbear Provincial Park

Sunday - Day paddle Parry Sound

Monday - Break Camp, Launch from Dillon’s Cove paddle to Big McCoy, set camp

Tuesday - Day Paddle (Destination based on weather)

Important Trip Info:

We will be spending Saturday and Sunday nights at Killbear Provincial Park. Participants are responsible for booking their own campsite.

This is a kayaking camping trip. Once we depart Killbear Provincial Park, there will be no access to facilities. Participants will need appropriate gear and should have experience with primitive camping. If you are unsure about primitive camping please contact the trip sponsors with any questions.

This trip offers many sheltered routes, however, there will be open crossings greater than 2 miles also, wind and weather conditions can cause non-sheltered areas to have L3+ conditions. Participants should be comfortable paddling in L3 conditions and maintaining a 2.5-3 mph pace. Daily paddles will range from 10-16 miles.

Weather conditions on Georgian Bay can change rapidly. It is advisable that you keep extra food, water and an emergency shelter/blanket/cag in your boat during day paddles in case we become windbound.

Have you ever been out paddling and seen someone using a paddle that looks like a 2×4? That is a Greenland stick! If you have ever been intrigued with the beauty, grace and effortless motion on how to move across the water this is the place for you. You do not have to own a Greenland stick; we have some available to share. Opportunities abound to understand the design and appreciate the construction and responsiveness of the traditional skin on frame kayak and how they differ from more modern designs.

Our event is held in beautiful Northern Minnesota. It is a small, affordable event and you have the option to sleep in a CASTLE with hot showers. All meals are provided and there is a Minnesota potluck Thursday night. Break out those tater tots. In addition to working on strokes and rolls, you can participate in learning how to throw a harpoon and give it a try on both the Greenland ropes and on the water. You may come to learn how to paddle with a Greenland stick and work on your first roll or maybe a more advanced roll. You will leave as a member of a new and welcoming family.

Location

Parker Scout Reservation and the Miller Castle

Set amongst 256 acres of mixed hardwood and conifers, the Reservation is located on North Long Lake, in Nisswa/Merrifield, MN. The camp features a medieval castle with bunk rooms, a kitchen, restrooms and a grand hall with a stage. Theres a pavilion for our outdoor presentations, miles of hiking trails and 2000 feet of shore line of which approximately 200 feet is sand. North Long Lake is 6143 Acres of shallow, clear, clean and warm water. The camp is on a small quiet arm of the lake, and conditions are possible with a 15 minute paddle to the main lake.

There are several options for lodging at the Parker Scout Reservation. You may camp (tent) at four different sites. Although there are no hookups, we have several spots that will accommodate your camping trailer (12′ or less extended, please). You may also stay in the Miller Castle bunkhouse. The medieval bunkhouse has several semi private rooms with private baths, (2-4 people) and four large bunk rooms which we will limit to 8 campers each. There are four large bathrooms with showers, and two commons areas. Available semi private rooms will be assigned to families with children and ADA persons first, then to the earliest registrants at 2 people to a room. No matter how you decide to sleep, the price remains the same, just be sure to indicate your preference at registration. Want to see the largest water falls in Indiana and paddle under the full moon? Here's your chance! This is a fun paddle and is open to most experience levels. Paddler must be able to paddle 8 miles round trip. A 10' boat or longer is suggested. These are head waters so this is a paddle rather than a float - there is no current but we will paddle at a moderate rate. The speed of motor boats is restricted so we should not have any problems with boat wake.

    We will meet up at the Cunot boat ramp (Map) at 6PM and launch by 6:30PM. We will paddle to the falls and take a short break there. Pit bathrooms are available at the falls. Most of the return trip will be under moonlight. We should return to the boat ramp around 11 PM.

    You are required to have a PFD, boat marker light such as a glow stick and a $5 2025 DNR non-motorized boat sticker on your boat . Boat stickers can be purchased online at http://stores.innsgifts.com/2014-state-park-permits/ or at any state park. The gate house at Lieber SRA should have them. You will pass it if you are coming from the north. Keep in mind if ordering off the website, it'll take about a week for them to ship it to you.

What to Bring: kayak or canoe, PFD, paddle, camera, sunscreen, lunch, dry bag, hat…Dress for the water and air temp.

Contingencies on this paddle: The acceptable water level for this trip is about 250-400 cfs on the Anderson gauge. If lower we will have to cancel: Cancelations will be made the evening before the trip by 8 PM.

This is a beautiful, forgotten section of the White River with a heavily shaded corridor of mature trees. You can sing or hum along with the sounds of the abundant waterfowl or just enjoy a relaxing paddle in nature's quietude.

This huge recreation area has 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline, Water Trails, abundant wildlife, designated birding spots with 30 pairs of nesting eagles, diverse camping opportunities, an elk & bison refuge, rich history and interesting shorelines. Fall colors should be at a peak during our event.

Camping: We will stay Hillman Ferry campground. Jan will be in section C3, site 57.

Itinerary: Arrival & departure days and time are optional based on your availability.

Thursday October 8:  Arrive and set up camp. Campground check-in begins at 4:30pm

Friday October 9: Lake Barkley: Taylor Bay to Honker Bay Woodland Nature Watch Area (10 mile round trip paddle) In Honker Bay refuge area we can do an easy 1.5 mile (each way) woodland hike to the Woodlands Nature Watch Station (admission $7.00 and open 10-5pm).

Saturday October 10:  Kentucky Lake Campsite Launch, destination TBD. Expect to paddle 12+ miles round trip.  We can explore the bays and shoreline looking for eagles and other wildlife.

Evening: Visit the Elk & Bison Prairie. This time of year the elk have massive racks and can be heard bugling

Sunday October 11:  Optional Day

Directions: Enter Land Between the Lakes North Entrance (I-24 to KY-453 south (exit 31). KY-453 becomes 100 as you enter LBL. Turn right on 110 and follow signs to Hillman Ferry Camping Area).

Equipment:  Standard kayak safety equipment.

Skill Level:  Able to paddle above distances with possible wind.
