Canoe & Kayak (Flatwater) Fleet

The HCKC Canoe & Kayak Paddling Group sponsors paddling trips on many Indiana rivers and lakes throughout the year.  There are many paddling events that you can enjoy this year on our Trip Schedule on rivers and lakes in all sections of Indiana.  There are sometimes new trips that we add during the paddling season, usually with email announcement to members.  We sometimes go out of state as well.  On these trips, you will see solo canoes, tandem canoes, and kayaks.

Club trips have sponsors that set a time and place to meet and decide which stretch of what river will be paddled. This group typically does trips (mostly in Indiana) on White River, Sand Creek, Driftwood, Fall Creek, Cataract Falls, and Flatrock.  We usually have a lake trip or two.  Most of our trips are day paddles, although we sometimes offer weekend trips.  Annual trip favorites include a New Year's Day Float, the Ice Falls Trip down Sugar Creek, and Driftwood

The calendar has been updated with 2022 trips.  Please remain flexible and understand that we will continue to comply with CDC and local guidelines for trips.  We are hopeful that we are on the downswing of the pandemic, and can have a reasonably full paddling season.   Everyone stay safe, and we'll see you on the water!

Formerly known as the Flatwater Fleet, this is the group that includes the widest variety of paddle craft.  On our trips, you may see canoes, kayaks (sit-in or sit on top), and even stand-up paddle boards (SUP) of all shapes and sizes.  Everyone is  welcome, with the caveat that trip leaders may set limitations on some trips for safety reasons.  We may paddle quiet lakes and streams, with water up to Class I or II.

Abbreviated CK on the club calendar, the Fleet is a great place for experienced paddlers, those new to paddling, families, and anyone interested in enjoying nature and camaraderie on the lakes, streams, and rivers in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and other states.  Trips vary from short (about 3 hours), to long (6-8 hours), and even multi-day camping trips.

The fleet will be planning our calendar at the Club planning meeting in January.  If you have trips you would like for us to consider, please let us know before the meeting.  If you are interested in becoming a trip leader, please email or call us.

We will also have at least one tandem canoe class this year, and hope to add a solo canoe class.  As always, the Club will offer Level 1 and 2 kayak classes, as well as swift water and open water rescue classes.

The Club continues to hold training sessions at the Thatcher Park Pool on Saturdays from 10 am-Noon through the winter.  It is a great place to practice wet exits, canoe or kayak re-entry, or to learn to roll kayaks or whitewater canoes.

If you are interested in the, or are new to the Club  and don't know how to get started, please email or call one of us.  If you don't have a boat, we often can find a member willing to share a boat, or loan one so you can get on the water safely.

    See you on the water!
