If you have not done so for this year, PLEASE FILL OUT THE NEW E-WAIVER. HCKC is moving to a new electronic waiver system instead of our old paper waiver. This only needs to be completed once each year. If you have already submitted your e-waiver, you do not need to do it again until next year. If you are bringing a non-member guest, they should use this e-waiver.

Trip Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Another moonlight paddle. This time we're heading to Monroe Lake using the Cutright boat ramp. We will be paddling mostly in a no-wake zone.
We will meet at 5:00pm and try to be on the water by 5:30pm. The sun sets around 8:40pm so we will have three hours of daylight to paddle. The moon rises about 10:10pm, so unfortunately we probably won't see the moon until we are getting ready to leave. We will be on the water about four hours.
Special Safety Considerations: Be sure to have a headlamp or flashlight. The law requires you have to have a white light visible for two miles. A glow stick or beacon light is nice to have attached to your PFD to make you visible in the darkness. For additional safety, please pick a paddling buddy and stay together.
Sunglasses are nice to have when paddling just before sunset. It may be cool in the evening, so consider bringing a light jacket.
Suggested items to bring: Wide brimmed hat, sun block, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, large sponge, bilge pump or container to bail out water, water, snacks, towel, change of clothes, water shoes, paddling gloves, rain gear, bug spray, safety whistle, camera, flashlight/headlamp, a sense of adventure, and a good dose of humor. For clothing try to use something other than cotton, especially if the weather is cool. Polypropylene or polyester are good choices since neither holds water and they wick moisture away from you.
Due to paddling at night, you MUST wear your PFD and you MUST have some form of light on you or your boat for this trip
This event is on IN-DNR property, so regulations require your boat to have a current Non-Motorized Boat Permit decal. They are available at most state parks or you can purchase one online or at the downtown Indy office for $5. You should be able to pick one up on the way to the meeting place, either at the DNR headquarter on Hwy 446 on the north side of the entrance to the Paynetown SRA or at the gate for the Paynetown SRA.

SK: Lake Monroe Overnight May 01-03, 2026
Expanded trip option: Vicki & I are planning to camp at Deem Wilderness area Friday through Sunday, as we were unable to attend the spring sea kayak campout last weekend. We will go down Friday night, load the kayaks, paddle to Deem Wilderness. We’ll set up camp and spend the night over there. Saturday morning we’ll make breakfast, paddle around the lake for a few hours, have lunch, and head back toward the boat ramp to hook up with the people doing the sunset paddle. After the sunset paddle concludes, we’ll go back to our camp for the night. In the morning we’ll break camp and paddle back to the car.
We’re planning to arrive at Cutright at 5 PM on Friday, pack the kayaks, and paddle across. When we leave camp Saturday morning, we’ll carry lunch and dinner for the day.
Please email Kyle at k_g_wills@hotmail.com or text at 463-269-8147 if you plan to join us for camping so we know how many people to expect at the ramp.

Join us for an overnight paddling trip on Lake Monroe. Lake Monroe lets us camp from our boats along the shore in Deem Wilderness. We will camp out on the peninsula across from Cutright Public Access Site.
Registration: Please register on the club web site or by email if necessary
Meeting Place/Put-In: Cutright Public Access Site. This is about 2 hours from the intersection of Hwy 37 and I-465 on the southeast side of Indianapolis. (Google Map)
Directions to Meeting Place: Take Hwy 446 south from Hwy 46 on the east side of Bloomington to the Lake Monroe causeway. Cutright is the first turn on your left immediately after you cross the causeway. Go to the first boat ramp that you come to after leaving Hwy 446.
What to Bring: Bring your paddling gear, spray skirt, camping gear, food for lunch, dinner (x2), and breakfast (x2), and warm clothes. You should also bring drinking water with you. We will be camping from our boats and you will have to pack all of your gear and food in your boat, so plan accordingly.
Be sure to have a 2026 Indiana DNR Nonmotorized Boat Permit. You should be able to pick one up on the way to the meeting place, either at the DNR headquarter on Hwy 446 on the north side of the entrance to the Paynetown SRA or at the gate for the Paynetown SRA.
Required Equipment: Depending on the temperatures, wet suits or dry suits are recommended. Due to potentially rough lake conditions, spray skirts, safety equipment, and sea/touring kayaks with fore and aft bulkheads are required.
Sunday: We are flexible here. We could return to Cutright as early as 10:00 am and drop off people who have to take off. We’ll talk and figure this out Saturday night depending on how far people want to paddle on Sunday and when people have get home.
