This is a non-club event. The local BSA council has an extended an offer to HCKC Members to attend its comprehensive adult canoe training course. The spring course is a two-weekend event that will be held May 4-5, and May 18-19. An additional kayak training will be held May 25 if enough participants sign up. The two-weekend course is intended to prepare participants to learn the basics of canoeing, as well as planning and safely executing a canoe trek to the Boundary Waters/Quetico, or other locations. The course is a combination of on-water and indoor/outdoor classroom. Food is provided as part of the course fee (Sat. Lunch/Dinner & Sun. Breakfast/Lunch). Participants may stay at home, or camp at Belzer during the course. Instructors are a combination of ACA Tandem Canoe Instructors, and BSA Instructors.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Adults 18 or older, Proof of swimming ability, BSA health form parts A & B, Liability waiver
SKILL INSTRUCTION: Canoe/paddle nomenclature, Canoe strokes and maneuvers, Reading water, Navigation Principles, Portage & carry techniques, Water rescues, Loading & unloading techniques, On water communications, Proper PFD selection & wear
TRIP PLANNING: Crew member selection, Proper gear choices (Personal & Crew Equipment), 1st aid recommendations, Map and Compass basics, Knots, Trip planning essentials, Training your team
