Lower Yough (class III)
Date: 27 - 28 April
Sponsor: Sharon Schierling
The Lower Youghiogheny (Class 3) is dam controlled and has guaranteed water for the weekend. The main Hoosier group will run the Lower both Saturday and Sunday. Those needing to leave early on Sunday may choose to run only the Loop. For experts, the Upper Yough class 4-5 will also release on Saturday, 4/27.
In the event that the Lower Yough is too high because of rain, other river options w/o dams typically become runnable such as Cheat Canyon, Cheat Narrows, Upper Big Sandy and the Casselman
On Friday, April 26, there may be a possibility to run Slippery Rock Creek (class II-III) if there is enough interest and the level is good. (It’s on the way if you’re driving from northern Indiana or Michigan.) If you are interested, let Sharon know.
Camping will be at Tall Oaks Campground (now owned by Wilderness Voyageurs), 544 Camp Riamo Rd, Farmington, PA 15437. With the change of ownership of the campground, there is a 15 person minimum and advance deposit required to reserve group sites. If fewer than 15 people register for the trip, we will reserve 1 or 2 of the bigger individual sites, depending on the number of participants. The camping fee has not changed. It is still $16 per person per night. The new owners have graded & graveled the worst parts of the roads w/in the campground and the shower facilities are maintained better than before.
