This class is limited to the first 5 registrants due to instructor to student ratio.
If you have questions, please contact Brent Saucerman at 317-523-8417. I will be instructing, possibly with help. This will be a basic canoeing course covering safety, the Forward, Reverse, Sweep, Reverse Sweep. C Stroke, and J Stroke. If time allows we may add a few strokes.
Please bring the following paddling gear:
Canoe, PFD, canoe paddle, bow and stern lines (painters), kneeling pad (if you wish), drybag for personal items. If you need a canoe, please make arrangements with me. I will bring some paddles as well.
Please bring the following personal gear: Rain gear or wetsuit/drysuit if you have them, dry change of clothes to leave in your car, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses on floating strap, at least 2 L of water, lunch and snacks.
This class will be open to HCKC members. if you are an ACA member, please provide your member number.
We will be on the water most of the day with breaks for restroom and lunch. please ensure you meet the ACA essential criteria for the Level 1 Introduction to canoeing below:
ACA courses are open to all individuals who acknowledge the ability to perform the following Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC):
Breathe independently (i.e., not require medical devices to sustain breathing)
Independently maintain sealed airway passages while under water
Independently hold head upright without neck / head support
Manage personal care independently or with assistance of a companion
Manage personal mobility independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance
Follow instructions and effectively communicate independently or with assistance of a companion
Independently turn from face-down to face-up and remain floating face up while wearing a properly fitted life jacket*
Get on / off or in / out of a paddlecraft independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance*
Independently get out and from under a capsized paddlecraft*
Remount or reenter the paddlecraft following deep water capsize independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance*
Maintain a safe body position while attempting skills, activities and rescues listed in the appropriate Course Outline, and have the ability to recognize and identify to others when such efforts would be unsafe given your personal situation*
*To participate in adaptive programs, participants must acknowledge only the first six EEC listed above. Adaptive Paddling Endorsed Instructors are trained to work with individuals who need or wish to learn skills required for ACA EEC#7-#11.
