    Sea/Touring Kayak Trip Announcement

Ohio River/American River Roots Festival                          Saturday, October 11, 2025

Trip Sponsors: Tony Pascuzzi & Greg Wood

Trip Level 2 with possible Level 3 conditions

Join us for a day on the Ohio River. We will paddle the Ohio River along the Cincinnati / Newport waterfronts, viewing the largest collection of riverboats in the country. Featured will be nine riverboats from seven of America’s historic river cities.

    Schedule:

Saturday – 10:00 am arrival at the put-in. Launch from Schmidt Boat Ramp (Ohio side) and paddle downstream to downtown Cincinnati and check out the riverboats and the festival. We’ll look for a suitable landing spot within close proximity to a lunch venue, and hopefully ice cream. Bring a lunch as Plan B.  Approximately 8-10 miles total.

Here is a great link to a guide to landmarks and features along the river -

Upon our return, once we’re loaded up, we’ll get dinner and a beverage at a local establishment.

Camping – there are several campgrounds within 30 minutes of the launch.

East Fork State Park – 2837 Old State Route 32, Batavia, OH  45106

New Richmond campgrounds – River Days CG, Riverfront RV Park

    Winton Woods Campground

Expected paddling conditions: Level 2 with possible Level 3 conditions – Kayak Touring (see HCKC Sea Kayaking Trip Levels chart).

The river gets a lot of boat and barge traffic in the summer especially on nice days. We expect lots of boats and jet skis. Paddlers should feel comfortable paddling in 1-2’ waves (primarily boat wakes).

What to bring: Appropriate paddling gear (including spray deck), safety equipment, snacks, water/drinks and lunch.  Average air temperatures for early October are typically in the 50-60’s F in the mornings and low to mid 70’s F in the afternoon. It’s unseasonably warm here now (upper 70’s – low 80’s) and is scheduled to remain in this range for the next 10 days. Updates will be provided accordingly.

Boat requirements: kayaks with fore/aft bulkheads and perimeter deck lines are required.
