The HCKC Annual Lower Yough July 4th Weekend will once again take place with camping at Tall Oaks Campground in Farmington PA. ($12 per person/per night) Rivers local to the area that provide options for club members include the Lower Yough, Upper Yough and the Savage River nearby in Maryland (which will have a release on Sunday the 2nd). If there is high water or low water other options include the Cheat and Tygart Rivers. For flat water the Middle Youghiogheny provides a scenic paddle and for non-paddlers there are bike and hiking trails and Tours of the the Frank Lloyd Wright's famous Falling Waters House nearby (obtain Tix in advance because some tours are selling out). Permits for the Lower Yough will need to be obtained for Saturday for a 1pm launch time from the Ohiopyle State Park website. (It is best to do that now online rather than chancing launch permit availability at the riverside Kiosk as there have been sellouts in the past. Currently as I write this there are 24 passes left for 1:00pm on Sat. the 1st.) Typically Sunday-noon does not sell out and some of the group will be heading to the Savage so we usually can obtain Sunday Launch permits at the river kiosk. Food and Drinks will be BYO. We typically go out on Saturday Night to one of the local restaurants. Bring a camp chair or two for the campfire and a hammock if you desire. Weather is usually great but has been known to rain occasionally so be prepared. Nights are typically cool in the Laurel Highlands, perfect for sleeping. This has always been a great trip especially for those not ready or comfortable on the Ocoee or more difficult rivers, but also has more challenging rivers like the Upper Yough and Savage. Truly something for everyone. If you are unsure whether you have the skills to paddle the Lower Yough in a hardboat, get in touch via email and we'll talk.
