July 2024

Welcome to the July edition of our newsletter! Summer is in full swing, and there's no better time to hit the water with your fellow paddlers.

Did you know that some of our HCKC members are American Canoe Association (ACA) certified instructors? This certification ensures that our instructors bring a high level of expertise and safety to every paddling trip and training session. Their knowledge and skills are a tremendous asset, providing members with top-notch instruction and valuable tips to enhance their paddling experience.

Being part of the Hoosier Canoe and Kayak Club is about more than just paddling—it's about building lasting relationships and connections. Our community is filled with passionate individuals who share a love for the water. Many of our members have formed friendships that span decades, creating a supportive and welcoming environment for newcomers and seasoned paddlers alike.

For only $20 a year, your membership offers incredible value—access to expertly led trips, skill-building sessions, and a vibrant community of paddling enthusiasts. Whether you're into sea kayaking, whitewater, or paddle fishing, there's something for everyone at the Hoosier Canoe and Kayak Club.

SKIPPER'S NOTE

BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR

Over the years, I've had the privilege of teaching hundreds of paddlers, sharing not only the skills and techniques but also the joy that paddling brings.

Teaching paddling has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I am deeply grateful for every moment.

Now is a great time for others to step forward to become an instructor. The certification process will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to guide others safely on their paddling adventures.

It's more than just teaching a skill; it's about fostering a love for the hobby, building a community, and making lifelong memories. There's a unique satisfaction in seeing someone advance in a sport we all love, knowing you played a part in their journey.

DOWN MEMORY LANE, PAST TRIPS

June 15: SUGAR CREEK

12 paddlers took part in this trip from west of Crawfordsville to Deer’s Mill, a distance of about 12 miles. It was a beautiful sunny day, with a high in the mid-80s, and a light breeze. The water was a little lower than ideal at 3.82 feet and 191 cfs, but proved to be adequate.

There was only one spot where just about everyone got hung in the shallows, and most were able to push on through without getting out of their boats. Despite the lower level, there was still a good current. The clear water let us view the interesting rocky creek bottom topography, and spot many fish. We spotted duck families along the way, and one immature bald eagle. There were a few other paddlers along this stretch, but not many (and one hovercraft!).

Many thanks to Jeff Stejskal for guiding our way to where there was the most flow and fewest obstacles.

GET INVOLVED WITH HCKC

Volunteers are needed to support the swimming portion of the Indy Sprint Triathlon Series.

HCKC members and guests provide safety boats for the swimmers in the 500-meter course. Participants are there to provide assistance to swimmers, guide them on the course, allow a place to rest or signal for extraction. We will be on the outside of the course while city lifeguards are on the inside of the course.

Meet at the Eagle Creek Park office on 56th street just northwest of the main park entrance and just before you get to the bridge over the reservoir. We must be unloaded and on the water by 7:45-50 as the swimming starts at 8am. Instructions will be given just prior to the event.

No special skills needed. We are usually done by 9. Some go to breakfast, some go paddle around, some have to go home and do chores.
