August 2025 HCKC Newsletter

As fall approaches, even though there are still some great trips to come, most of our paddling season is behind us.  I'd like to shout out a big thank you to everyone who has volunteered and pitched in to make this season possible.  Whether you led a trip, taught or assisted with a course or pool session, served on a committee or the board, helped with shuttling or demos, served as a Triathlon safety boat, or any other task that helped make our club better.  Even smaller things like helping a fellow paddler car top his boat, giving pointers to new paddlers or helping set up for an event all add up to make things better for all of us.  Thanks to you all!

UPCOMING TRIPS AND EVENTS

KEEP AN EYE ON OUR CALENDAR FOR UPCOMING EVENTS THAT MAY BE ADDED AT SHORT NOTICE.  THERE WILL GENERALLY ALSO BE AN EMAIL ANNOUNCEMENT

CALENDAR

Eagle Creek Tuesday Evening Paddles

Eagle Creek paddles started on June 24th and run through the end of September. These are unstructured paddles where HCKC members can explore the lake and train to develop speed-endurance or to practice skills. If you would like to paddle with other HCKC members, I would recommend coordinating that through the club bulletin board, Facebook or e-mail.

These paddles are not formal training or a meetup group of paddlers.  They afford HCKC members chances to individually experience paddling on Eagle Creek Reservoir without a gate charge on Tuesday evenings.

UPCOMING CANOE & KAYAK TRIPS:

Cataract Falls Full Moon Paddle Sept. 6

Want to see the largest water falls in Indiana and paddle under the full moon? Here's your chance! This is a fun paddle and is open to most experience levels. Paddler must be able to paddle 8 miles round trip. A 10' boat or longer is suggested. These are head waters so this is a paddle rather than a float - there is no current but we will paddle at a moderate rate. The speed of motor boats is restricted so we should not have any problems with boat wake.  We  paddle to the falls in the daylight, and return after sunset.

CATARACT

Grayson Lake, KY, Oct. 31-Nov. 2

Camping fills up early.  You should get campsites soon if you wish to attend.  Sites can be shared if you are tent camping, so you can possibly share even if no sites are available to reserve.  Grayson Lake has some amazing cliff lined sections and is a beautiful place to paddle.  This trip is for both Canoe & Kayak and Sea Kayak, although we will travel a little slower than a typical SK trip.  This is a lake paddle, so all should be prepared for a paddle and not a float, since there is next to no current.

NON-HCKC Nanty Fest WW Weekend - Sept. 26-28

I'm organizing another 3 day paddling trip for the weekend of September 26 - 28. This Nanty Fest weekend (formerly Guest Appreciation Fest) and there will be Upper Nantahala releases on, both, Saturday and Sunday. (See link below).

https://noc.com/events/nanty-fest/

I have a bunkhouse type cabin reserved with 8 beds just outside Bryson City NC for all 3 nights (Fri, Sat, Sun). There are 6 beds available now - 2 are in a room together and 4 are in an open loft. All the beds are big enough to sleep two people. There are two bathrooms with showers, a kitchen, a nice front porch, and A/C. Cost is dependent upon how many people are in the cabin. But expect it to be between $35 and $45/night/person. For those who want to camp, Smokey Mountain Meadows Campground is right next to the cabin.

Lower Yough Success! Big thanks to the trip leaders for leading an epic Lower Yough trip last weekend! Everyone stayed dry – congratulations to a member on their first run! The club spirit shines through – "paying it forward" as one member beautifully put it.
