BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR
Over the years, I've had the privilege of teaching hundreds of paddlers, sharing not only the skills and techniques but also the joy that paddling brings.
Teaching paddling has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I am deeply grateful for every moment.
Now is a great time for others to step forward to become an instructor. The certification process will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to guide others safely on their paddling adventures. It's more than just teaching a skill; it's about fostering a love for the hobby, building a community, and making lifelong memories. There's a unique satisfaction in seeing someone navigate their first rapid or complete their first roll, knowing you played a part in their journey.

June 2: West Fork of the White River
After a failed 2023 attempt to paddle this section, due to low water, the HCKC was finally able to launch. A rain delay pushed the paddle from June 1 to June 2. This provided the needed water level of 280-300 cfs—amount of flow needed for a safe moving water experience with many riffles and low wave train sections. There were no unavoidable strainers and the moving water in various sections delighted the 9 paddlers.
The wild life that greeted us along the way were a couple of herons, an eagle, many turtles and a few more unidentifiable birds. The scenery was lush with a canopy of trees shading us for many of the 14.5 mile paddle. The 4.5 hour paddle revealed the endurance and willingness of the members to sally forward in the pursuit of a memorable paddle trip. Given the availability of a few beaches at this level, the paddlers we able to replenish their energy with a lunch break after 6.5 miles.
This trip will definitely be on the calendar next year!

April 13: Sand Creek Once again, this year Sand Creek worked its mystery and decided to play its annual HCKC roulette game. With four consecutive days of heavy rainfall totaling 5 inches (up to 24 hours before the scheduled put in) the skies finally cleared to provide a beautiful Springtime day for a downstream float. With an original and overwhelming sign up of 36 different paddlers from 5 different midwestern states the final tally was an even 50/50 split of 18 cancellations and 18 arrivals. Overall a somewhat lucky but yet successful journey for all those who attended and the numerous rock ledges the creek has to offer did not disappoint. After the last boats were loaded a couple of carloads traveled a mile downstream where I gave a mini tour of the overlooks over Sand Creek and my 1899 log cabin. Sincerely, Richard Tekulve-Sand Creek trip leader since 2006

Volunteers are needed to support the swimming portion of the Indy Sprint Triathlon Series. HCKC members and guests provide safety boats for the swimmers in the 500-meter course. Participants are there to provide assistance to swimmers, guide them on the course, allow a place to rest or signal for extraction. We will be on the outside of the course while city lifeguards are on the inside of the course. Meet at the Eagle Creek Park office on 56th street just northwest of the main park entrance and just before you get to the bridge over the reservoir. We must be unloaded and on the water by 7:45-50 as the swimming starts at 8am. Instructions will be given just prior to the event. No special skills needed. We are usually done by 9. Some go to breakfast, some go paddle around, some have to go home and do chores. Register or contact Dwayne James at dwaynesjamesa1@hotmail.com or Sue Foxx sue.ann.foxx@gmail.com.

Though this is a NON-HCKC event, river clean ups and water conservation is an important part of our mission. We encourage members to volunteer with organizations like Friends of the White River to help keep our waters way clean and safe. If you are interested in learning more about conservation, contact Conservation Committee Chair, Ben Larson.
