    HCKC Pool Sessions

To Sign Up:  Contact Dave Ellis to make sure that some one who you can work with will be there.

Wednesday Pool Session - 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm:  From Wednesday, April 5, 2016 through November

These pool sessions are focused on skill refinement and individual practice for all paddlers - whitewater kayakers,  whitewater and open canoeists, recreational kayakers, and sea kayakers - seeking to practice bracing, rolling, open water reentries, etc.   The pool is also popular with freestyle play boaters who want to learn flat water moves such as cartwheels, squirts and stalls and with sea kayakers wanting to refine their roll or work on open water rescues.  It is also a great place to meet other paddlers, find out about upcoming trips, and try out different boats and paddles. Participants often go out for refreshments afterwards to swap paddling stories and watch videos.

There is a beginner's trip on June 24-25th on the Tuckasegee and Nantahala near Bryson City, North Carolina. This trip has been well received every year and all have had a great time. It will be Section 3 of the Tuck on Saturday and the Nantahala on Sunday or Nantahala both days depending on the group.  Both of these rivers are good for Whitewater paddling beginners. Both of the rivers have areas that can be portaged or avoided if necessary.

Please Contact Rob Henry for more information.

Orivs of Carmel has invited our club for a free demonstration and instructions on the art of Fly fishing.  They will go over all the basics from rods, reels, line, leaders and flies.  How to set up and the art of casting.  This is a family oriented  event.  Anyone of any age can learn to fly fish.  And girls it's not just for macho guys.  Fly fishing is a finesse activity and females tend to do well with fly fishing.  It's not just for trout fishing in Colorado or Pennsylvania. Fly fishing can be done for any species on any type of water.  Once you lean to fly fish you will be hooked.  Next thing you know you will be tying your own flies and taking every opportunity to catch a finned predator. Growing up on the water I remember as kid 8-10 years of age taking my grandfather's 9 foot 9 weight bamboo fly rod rod out and catching everything from bluegill, bass, silvers to northern pike.  The fish just seem to love the little popper fly's I would throw them.  I've  never stopped fly fishing.  This class Is limited to 15 people so please register soon.  Bring your significant other or sibling.  Bring a boat and go paddle after the event.  We can discuss Paddle fishing after.  Click on the link below and go to trips and events or from calendar click on event and register.

******** LOWER YOUGH July 4th Wknd - June 30- July 3 FARMINGTON, PA ****** OHIOPYLE STATE PARK

The HCKC Annual Lower Yough July 4th Weekend will once again take place with camping at Tall Oaks Campground in Farmington PA. ($12 per person/per night) Rivers local to the area that provide options for club members include the Lower Yough, Upper Yough and the Savage River nearby in Maryland (which will have a release on Sunday the 2nd). If there is high water or low water other options include the Cheat and Tygart Rivers. For flatwater the Middle Youghiogheny provides a scenic paddle and for non-paddlers there are bike and hiking trails. Fort Necessity Battlefield N.P. and the Nemocolin Resort and Casino also provide other adventures. Or you or your significant other can tour Frank Lloyd Wright's famous Falling Waters House nearby (obtain Tix in advance because some tours are selling out). Cut and paste this link - http://www.fallingwater.org/82/tours-and-tickets

$2 Launch Permits for the Lower Yough will need to be obtained for Saturday for a 1pm launch time from the Ohiopyle State Park website. (It is best to do that now online rather than chancing launch permit availability at the riverside Kiosk as there have been sellouts in the past. 1 Permit= $2 launch+$5 order fee or for example 10 launch permits @$2 = $20+$5 order fee, so buy your permits with your friends) Currently as I write this there are 24 passes left for 1:00pm on Sat. the 1st.) Typically Sunday-noon does not sell out and some of the group will be heading to the Savage so we usually can obtain Sunday Launch permits at the river kiosk. Here is the online link to copy and paste for permits (keep your confirm. #): https://pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/tourDetails.do?contractCode=PA&tourId=24250

Food and Drinks will be BYO. We typically go out on Saturday Night to one of the local restaurants. Bring a camp chair or two for the campfire and a hammock if you desire. Weather is usually great but has been known to rain occasionally so be prepared. Nights are typically cool in the Laurel Highlands, perfect for sleeping under the stars.

This has always been a great trip especially for those not ready or comfortable on the Ocoee or more difficult rivers, but also has more challenging rivers like the Upper Yough and Savage. Truly something for everyone. If you are unsure whether you have the skills to paddle the Lower Yough in a hardboat, get in touch via email and we'll talk. PLEASE POST TO LET ME KNOW YOU MIGHT BE COMING. If you have an equipment issue you can't resolve, reach out, club members often have a spare.

P.S. I have one other safety boater but could use a couple of others to step up.
