Clear Creek is a beautiful stream located on the Cumberland Plateau. One typically encounters good water quality and a remote feel. This will be a weather dependent trip for the April 1-2 weekend. We will consider sections between Barnett, Jett, Lilly and Nemo bridges, depending on the interest and ability of the group, weather forecast and the amount of water in the river. These are progressively more difficult sections as you go down stream, rapids are typically class II-III+, depending on volume in the river. Camping will most likely be at Frozen Head State Park near Wartburg, TN. Descriptions can be found on the AW site as follows. The sponsor can be contacted at three17 two 98 nine O forty8. Or email Dave Timm.

    HCKC Pool Sessions

To Sign Up:  Contact Dave Ellis to make sure that some one who you can work with will be there.

Wednesday Pool Session - 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm:  From Wednesday, April 5, 2016 through November

These pool sessions are focused on skill refinement and individual practice for all paddlers - whitewater kayakers,  whitewater and open canoeists, recreational kayakers, and sea kayakers - seeking to practice bracing, rolling, open water reentries, etc.   The pool is also popular with freestyle play boaters who want to learn flat water moves such as cartwheels, squirts and stalls and with sea kayakers wanting to refine their roll or work on open water rescues.  It is also a great place to meet other paddlers, find out about upcoming trips, and try out different boats and paddles. Participants often go out for refreshments afterwards to swap paddling stories and watch videos.

Ken Jordan and I are planning to go to Tuck Fest. We were there last year and it was a lot of fun.

Event: Tuck Fest is a three day festival that celebrates the outdoor lifestyle through  competitions, exhibitions, demos and live music held at the National Whitewater Center. (The name has nothing to do with the Tuckasegee River. When you go to the web site, you will see the origin of the name.)http://tuckfest.org/about/

This is a true festival with music and various events that are appropriate for multiple age levels and interests. One fee of $35 allows you to participate in Festival events.

    Dates:  April 21-23, 2017

Location: White Water Center - Charlotte, North Carolina

Appropriate for: all levels of kayakers. There are beginner, intermediate and advanced channels on this man made course. There are also various classes taught by "friends".

There are mountain bike trails to ride and lots of hiking. The Center provides a way to practice kayak skills in warm water (and you don't have to carry your boat back to the top!).

Considerations:  There is no camping at the site. When you go the web site, you will see the 2 available places, which are (unfortunately), a ways away. We are recommending we share some hotel rooms. They are close to the Center and with 4 people will be reasonably priced. Fairfield Inn and Hampton are the two that have a relationship with the Center (those chains usually have breakfast too). Let us know if you are interested in a room share.
What to do next: Go to the web site to review information about the Festival. Watch the video while you are on the site. Register on-line.

Let one of us know if you are planning to go. We will be looking for you at the site.

    Laurie and Ken

Please contact Ken Jordan or Lori Levknecht for more information.

    • 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
    • Loveland Canoe and Kayak, 174 Karl Brown Way, Loveland, OH 45140

Start searching through your kayak, canoe and other outdoor gear and dust off that kayak or canoe you aren’t using as its getting close to the annual Cincinnati Paddlers Spring Swap Meet.  Once again, Mark Bersani, owner of Loveland Canoe and Kayak, will let us use his facility for the swap meet.  If you haven’t been here before, Mark’s livery is located right on the Little Miami River next to the railroad trestle in downtown Loveland.  The close proximity to the water allows you to try a kayak before you buy it.

Date: Saturday April 22nd (rain date Saturday April 29th)

Be sure to come early for the biggest selection and stay late for some last minute deals.  You can bring kayaks, canoes and other hand powered watercraft – sorry no boats.  You can also bring any other gear related to outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, skiing, etc.

Most sellers require cash so bring at least enough to place a hold a kayak or canoe.  Bills of sale will be provided or you can download from the Cincy Paddlers web site.

If you haven’t been to Mark’s in the past year, the city of Loveland has paved over the parking area.  So we don’t run afoul of any Loveland codes regarding private sales on public property, all items for sale must be placed on Mark’s property. You can park in the main lot – just place all sale items in the designated location.  I will be there by 9 am to direct sellers where to set up.

Unlike the winter swap meet no tables are provided so bring tables, chairs, blankets – whatever you need to display your items.

Make sure you tag your items with your name and phone number in case you are away from your items.

And as always there is no charge for selling or attending.

If this is your first sale, feel free to ask questions during the sale.  We are a group whose mission is to promote paddle sports in a positive manner so we are all here to help.

    • Elkhart IN, Willowdale park

On June 10, show up at Elkhart, Indiana's Willowdale Park at 10 A. M. EDT for a day of easy class one rapids . The last mile of Christiana Creek has 6 or 7 class I features, logs to dodge, and friendly eddies for ferrying, eddy turns, and peel outs. Practice your moving water roll. If you have rolled in a pool, give the creek a try, with easy rescues at hand.

Running the last mile takes about an hour, so multiple runs can be done to perfect your class I moves. The trip leader will stay as long as you want and run the creek until no one is still interested. Though this is billed as a beginner trip, everyone is welcome.

Be sure to let me know that you are coming! Ask anything you are wondering about!

The Elkhart City Parks we will use do not have public restrooms, so you will want to find a place to relieve yourself before you show up. There is a McDonalds at 130 N. Main St. that's less than 10 minutes from the meeting place.

You need the 5 whitewater basics: helmet, neoprene spray skirt, pfd, paddle, and kayak. The kayak canbe a playboat, river runner, creeker, or crossover. If you put the word out there are many HCCmembers who will let you borrow a boat. You may want to add elbow pads if you don't have a reliablebrace! The water should be relatively warm.

Free primitive camping is available for Friday and Saturday nights. Be sure to request this ahead of time!

Camping also available at Potato Creek State Park

Boat Demo, Swap Meet, and Social.  HCKC members bring their boats to Geist Park for other members to try. A great opportunity for those looking to demo other types of boats; or purchase a gently-used boat from another member.   Pitch-in at Geist Park Shelter.  Geist Park is located on a calm channel of water, perfect for demoing new boats.

This trip is designed to follow up on Saturday's Christiana Creek trip. Spend the afternoon running class II rapids in South Bend. Though current information is not posted, it will probably be open 1-5 and cost $15. Check the website closer to the date to be sure: http://sbvpa.org/parks/east-race- waterway/

It is really safe, with multiple lifeguards to rescue you if needed. In addition to your paddling gear, bringa lawn chair and food, as there are usually quite a few HCC members in attendance.

The usual meeting spot is the Peoplelink parking lot:
