HCKC Pool sessions at Thatcher are organized to allow HCKC members and guests to learn and practice paddling skills in a safe environment with other paddlers, some of which are ACA certified instructors but we all try to help each other get better and safer for when we venture out to the water!  These pool sessions are focused on skill refinement and individual practice for all paddlers - whitewater kayakers,  whitewater and open canoeists, recreational kayakers, and sea kayakers - seeking to practice bracing, rolling, open water reentries, etc.   The pool is also popular with freestyle play boaters who want to learn flat water moves such as cartwheels, squirts and stalls and with sea kayakers wanting to refine their roll or work on open water rescues.  It is also a great place to meet other paddlers, find out about upcoming trips, and try out different boats and paddles. Participants often go out for refreshments afterwards to swap paddling stories and watch videos.

    Lower Yough (class III)

    Date: 27 - 28 April

    Sponsor: Sharon Schierling

The Lower Youghiogheny  (Class 3is dam controlled and has guaranteed water for the weekend.  The main Hoosier group will run the Lower both Saturday and Sunday.  Those needing to leave early on Sunday may choose to run only the Loop.  For experts, the Upper Yough class 4-5 will also release on Saturday, 4/27.

In the event that the Lower Yough is too high because of rain, other river options w/o dams typically become runnable such as Cheat Canyon, Cheat Narrows, Upper Big Sandy and the Casselman

On Friday, April 26, there may be a possibility to run Slippery Rock Creek (class II-III) if there is enough interest and the level is good.  (It’s on the way if you’re driving from northern Indiana or Michigan.)  If you are interested, let Sharon know.

Camping will be at Tall Oaks Campground (now owned by Wilderness Voyageurs), 544 Camp Riamo Rd, Farmington, PA 15437.  With the change of ownership of the campground, there is a 15 person minimum and advance deposit required to reserve group sites.  If fewer than 15 people register for the trip, we will reserve 1 or 2 of the bigger individual sites, depending on the number of participants.  The camping fee has not changed.  It is still $16 per person per night. The new owners have graded & graveled the worst parts of the roads w/in the campground and the shower facilities are maintained better than before.

     Stonycreek River (class II-III+)

    Date: 17-19 May 2024

    Sponsor: Sharon Schierling

The 2024 Stonycreek Rendezvous will be held May 17th, 18th, 19th in Johnstown, PA.  It’s a festival including- Live Music under the pavilion, Vendors, Auction, Food Trucks, Libations, Rodeo Competition, Down River Race, Nightine play wave action under the lights. For complete info on the festival, see: https://www.stonycreekrendezvous.com/

Camping: Greenhouse Park, Green House Rd, Johnstown, PA 15905. Bring your tent, trailer or RV.  Camping for the festival is in the park and the Hoosiers always camp together, so find us before setting up your tent.  $10 gets you a three day pass to freely come and go from the event. An additional $10 gets you a three day camping pass.

There is a combination release from the reservoir and natural flow, so there’s guaranteed water. If there is sufficient natural flow, they cut back the level of the release. Best of both worlds!

Stonycreek Canyon (class III+) is a great next step for those who can run the Lower Yough comfortably.  It requires more boat control and is an introduction to creeking. It is also known as “Surfers Paradise” because of the many surfing waves.  In addition, at the park they’ve built two play waves, with good eddy service in case you or the kids want to practice your surfing or playboat moves – whether or not you enter the rodeo competition.  (Great place to demo your friend’s boat!)

The main Hoosier group will run both the Canyon section and the Lower section on Friday and Saturday.  The campground/festival site is the takeout so when you get off the river, put your boat on your shoulder and walk to our camp.  (No one has to go get vehicles except the shuttle drivers!)

On Sunday, we will run the Canyon section only, taking out at Carpenters Park so we can get on the road earlier.

Volunteers needed for HCKC booth at Outdoor Explore in Lafayette

Tippecanoe Outdoor Explore is an event designed to introduce people to various outdoor activities.  Hours are 10 am to 4 pm Saturday June 8.

HCKC will have a booth set up for paddlesports at Outdoor Explore.  We could use a few volunteers to help with setup, running the booth, boat handling, on water support, and teardown.  We would be giving people a basic introduction to paddlesports.  You would not need to be present for the whole day.  Please contact Judy Thompson judy_thom@hotmail.com if you would like to help.

This is from Outdoor Explore write up:    "Suit-up with a personal floatation device (PFD) and prepare to learn about some of the basics of canoeing and kayaking with the experts from the Hoosier Canoe & Kayak Club. Basic safety information will be covered, along with overviews of simple paddle strokes, entering and exiting boats, boat gear and transport, where to paddle and how to find canoe/kayak liveries. Limited on-the-water sessions will be provided on the hour so be sure to arrive early to sign a waiver and register for a session. On-the-water participants must be 18 or older and able to swim; 12 if accompanied by an adult."

Friday June 21- Sunday June 23

Location: Summit Lake State Park *Camping reservations fill quickly at this  . Sites for these dates becomes available for reservations December 21

Instructor Sponsors:Linda Decker & Jim Heichelbech

Join us for a fun training weekend focusing on kayak skills and open water rescues. It is a great chance to get to know other paddlers, learn what to do in a rescue situation and improve your skills. If you can’t come for the weekend, come for the day you choose..

    Itinerary:

Friday June 21st Arrive to camp Options: evening paddle, practice rolling, group campfire

Saturday June 22th Day will focus on rescues, towing Launch Time tbd

Sunday June 23rd Intermediate Skills – strokes, edging, bracing Launch Time tbd

Location: Summit Lake 5993 N. Messick Road New Castle, Indiana  South Boat Launch Near Harvey Shelter (Enter Park and go left at the T intersection and follow the signs to the boat launch)

We will be practicing sea kayak handling and rescue techniques.  We will focus on how to manage your boat to keep from capsizing, and how to get yourself and your friends back into their boats when the inevitable happens in open water.  There will be plenty of time to work on strokes, bracing, balancing, towing, and rescues.

This clinic is an opportunity for new paddlers to learn open water rescue techniques and a chance for more experienced paddlers to compare techniques and practice them in a safe environment.  This clinic is important since kayakers need to regularly practice these skills, so they are “fresh” when we get into a real rescue situation.  You want to know how to get yourself or someone else back in their boat quickly and on your first attempt.   Open water paddlers should take this course before attempting any "big water" adventures.

    Rescue Course Content

    ·       Wet exiting your boat

    ·       Solo Reentries (Paddle Float, Cowboy, Reenter and Roll)

Participants often go out for refreshments afterwards to swap paddling stories and watch videos.

Swimming portion of the  Indy Sprint Triathlon Series.  HCKC members and guest provide safety boats for the swimmers in the 500 meter course.  Participants are there to provide assistance to swimmers, guide them on the course,  allow a place to rest or signal for extraction.  We will be on the outside of the course while city lifeguards are on the inside of the course. Meet at the Eagle Creek Park office on 56th street just northwest of the main park entrance and just before you get to the bridge over the reservoir.

If you're bringing a guest or another family member please register them separately.

We must be unloaded and on the water by 7:45-50 as the swimming starts at 8am.   Instructions will be given just prior to the event.  No special skills needed.  Items which may enhance your effectiveness are whistle,  short throw line and float, extra PFD.  We are usually done by 9.  Some go to breakfast, some go paddle around, some have to go home and do chores.

This is an important event to HCKC as we the club is paid a $1000.00 for helping with this event.  You will get an event T-shirt for participating, please register with shirt size.  Canoe, Kayak or paddle board OK.

If you have questions or concerns please contact Dwayne James dwaynesjamesa1@hotmail.com or Sue Foxx sue.ann.foxx@gmail.com

    HCKC POOL POLICIES

    • Participants must sign in each session and pay $10.00 per individual or $15 per family per session to cover pool rental.
    • Please make certain your boat is clean and free of debris inside and out before bringing it into the pool.
    • First time participants must check-in with the pool coordinator before entering the pool.
